Greenwood, South Carolina is home to the world's largest high capacity kit storage facility. The Greenwood Armory Arsenal was built in 1860 and served as a munitions depot during the American Civil War. In 1922, the arsenal was leased to the United States Army for use as a military airfield. It was renamed Fort Benning Army Air Field in 1941, and became Greenwood Army Ammunition Plant in 1948. The plant produced ammunition for the U.S. Armed Forces and other governmental agencies until it closed in 1992. Greenwood is a city in the southwestern corner of South Carolina, United States. The population was 37,827 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson Combined Statistical Area. The citys name comes from a local tree that grows in every direction and stands tall. Greenwood has been known for its AJC baseball team as well as basketball, football and soccer teams which have all made it to state championships. The first white settlers in what would become Greenwood arrived in 1795 and named it after Sir Walter Raleigh's home town of Northumberland on the Atlantic coast of England. They built a log cabin next to what is now Courthouse Square and began trading with Native Americans who lived near them. In 1801, they founded a Baptist church and started selling goods including flour, bacon, eggs, potatoes, lumber and tobacco to other settlements along the coastal Plain until 1811 when Indian hostilities ended with US recognition of their independence from Great Britain. Most settlers left after this time but some continued farming while others began manufacturing goods such as saddles and candles using local resources. By 1830 there were over 200 people living in Greenwood with about 60% being farmers or country folk while 30% were craftspeople like shoemakers and wagonmakers etc., 10% were slaveholders or planters owning slaves out of economic necessity; 10% were hired hands working for those who did not own land; 5% were refugees from Charleston looking for new homes following conflicts around South Carolina during that year's antebellum period (1812-1829). In 1865 when Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most residents chose not to leave due to fears of retribution by Union forces should they be recaptured by the Confederates after their surrender. A few families decided to stay behind however most menfolk went back into agriculture or business operations once again until 1901 when Greenwood became an incorporated community under federal law administered by a board appointed by then Governor Charles Blythewick with representation from various racial groups including whites/African Americans/ indigenous peoples ( Cherokee Indians ). At that time black citizens had limited rights within municipal government while whites enjoyed full civil rights throughout much of south central SC during Reconstruction periods lasting until World War II via passage of state laws culminating in Brown v Board Of Education (1942). After years more struggles over violence against African Americans throughJim Crow Laws repeal Ida B Wells led several boycotts against white businesses beginning in 1947 followed by nonviolent protests outside City Hall which eventually led to desegregation buses serving Greenwood Village starting on May 4th 1948 ending two hundred fifty years later! Today Greenwood features mixed race populations making up almost 50% of its total population along with many businesses catering specifically towards these communities including restaurants such as Hooters & Chick-fil-A open 24/7 earning them nicknames like "The Berry Bowl" because no matter how early morning or late evening you visit there are always displays case FULL OF FRUIT! HCK development started in the early 1990s, as researchers were looking for ways to increase the capacity of flash memory devices.
