Greenwood, South Carolina is a town located in Bladen County, North Carolina. The population was 4,939 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is the county seat of Bladen County. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Area. Gold Beach State Beach and Greenwood Golf Course are two of the most popular tourist destinations in Greenwood. Gold Beach State Beach features crystal clear waters and white sand beaches for swimming, sunbathing and windsurfing; while Greenwood Golf Course offers an 18-hole course with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The town was founded on October 5, 1868 by three men: Jno. Horry Greenough, Wm. Moseley Marshall and Geo Fenton Shipley from nearby Rocky Mount as a small community named after Colonel John C LEDGE who had donated land to support military operations in Southeast Carolina during the Mexican War era. The first public school opened its doors in 1870 for students from rural areas east of Rocky Mount along with instruction in reading, writing and arithmetic from Reverend James LEEKINS who also served as teacher until his death in 1871 at age 31 years old following a long illness which lasted five months. A post office was established at Greenwood on November 15, 1870 under the name "Cox's Mills". On December 1st of that year it became "Greenwood" after local businessman Elisha DICKERSON bought 500 acres (2 km²) adjacent to present day Greenwood for $1 per acre ($40 000 total). That same year also saw construction begin on what would become infamous as "the White House", later renamed "Drury Lane" due to its ownership by Drury & Gamble when it merged into American Tobacco Company in 1918-1918 (later again renamed American Tobacco Co., Inc.) In 1907 Mrs Elizabeth STRONGFALL moved her family from Spartanburg to live permanently in Greenwood and began teaching there before becoming Superintendent of Schools for Bladen County School District #5 beginning on April 30th that year which she still holds today despite having retired four times! From 1909 until 1935 all primary/elementary schools were operated under one roof known as "School No." During that time enrollment increased from 2 teachers to 34 with girls making up 10% of all students while boys made up 80% - this despite segregated facilities existing within each grade level until 1954 when Grades K through 8 were integrated according to state law passing prior to desegregation rulings by U S Supreme Court In 1924 Revocation Order No.#4 issued by Governor Edmund Boddy allowed whites only voting rights within Gadsden County while black citizens living east or west of Gadsden could vote only within their own respective counties . Colored citizens were finally given full citizenship status upon General Assembly passage giving them voting rights throughout both states on May 3rd 1930 On January 6th 1934 A tornado touched down just outside town limits spinning around then damaging numerous homes before dissipating near mile marker 191 19 south west Of downtown causing no fatalities however destroying several businesses including Post Office & Telephone Store owned by Mr & Mrs Ira EDWARDS which closed its doors for good that same day . After World War II many residents decided not to return home following service members' returns home across state lines; instead they relocated away from active military installations such as Fort Braggs Naval Base located about 60 miles (100 km) northeast of town via Interstate 285 . However a few families returned during the late 1990s when Hurricane Andrew destroyed parts of eastern Bladen County inflicting significant damage particularly inside Blackwell Township where much restoration work took place ensuing Operation Dawn 0806 1995 In 1960 Revocation Order No.#8 issued by Governor George Wallace allowed African Americans access onlyto limited numbersof voting privileges within certain gated communities although they still possessed civil rights equivalent thereto like other white citizens within their respective jurisdictions .. In 1987 A severe flooding event occurred which damaged numerous homes throughout downtown Greenawood leaving nearly 100 people homeless including some who lived upstairs inside Boardinghouses .. Many residents chose not rebuild following this natural disaster opting instead for relocation away from central city amenities.. This choice has since been reversed resulting over recent decades in more than $200 million worth reconstruction projects taking place Throughout Town center consisting primarilyof new housing units&businessesDAVID PITTMAN
