Greenwood is the county seat for Greene County and was incorporated on November 3, 1837. The first settler in Greenwood was James Aiken who came to what is now Greenwood from Beaufort County in 1798. In 1840, when Greenwood became a town, it had only 350 residents and consisted mostly of log homes built by settlers around a square mile (1 km2) courthouse square which included Griggs Mercantile Store and Post Office buildings dating back to 1836-38; also located were some blacksmith shops and a few stores run by white citizens before the Civil War began; most important among these early businesses was Fayetteville Iron Works owned by Samuel Proctor which produced cannons used during the war including those used in Fort Sumter After Reconstruction followed the American Civil War ended in 1865, Greenwood experienced rapid growth due to new transportation technologies - railroads arrived in 1861 followed by automobiles arriving soon afterwards - which led to more people coming into town and more businesses opening up along with an increase in housing prices making Greenwood one of the most expensive towns on its borders during this time period In 1920-22 new annexations resulted in Greenwood reaching its current size with 8 acres (3 hectares) annexed beyond its original boundaries bringing its total area up to 24 acres (10 hectares).
