In 2009, four residents of neighboring Union City were charged with trespassing after they refused to leave their home while construction was underway on Interstate 95 near their intersection. The project involved adding flyovers onto I-95 so that truck traffic could be diverted away from private property closer to city limits without going through what used to be Union City proper; however, some residents objected to this change because it would increase vehicular traffic on their streets and make them less accessible for pedestrians and cyclist). The case attracted national attention because it highlighted issues around access to infrastructure projects among minority communities in South Carolina – specifically those near major highways such as I-95 - but also raised questions about whether governments can constitutionally prevent people from occupying private land if they do not consent to being there (in this case, duelling neighborhoods against each other).
