Greenwood is a small town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. It was founded in 1835 and has remained a predominately white community for over 160 years. The town has a population of just over 6,000 residents today and the gun industry is an important part of its economy. Greenwood’s history with firearms can be traced back to 1835 when two men named John Hawkins and Thomas Hargrave bought land east of the current town line in order to start a plantation. The area that now makes up Greenwood was first populated by black slaves who worked on the plantation. When the owners died, their slaves were free and they began to move into the area. In 1854, Greenwood became part of Union County, South Carolina and began to gain representation on local government. Since World War II, Greenwood has become one of the most popular shooting destinations inSouth Carolina because of its wide range of NRA certified ranges as well as its easy access to ammunition stores and other shooting supplies. Greenwood is located on the north side of Spartanburg County and is bordered by Greenville to the east, Pickens County to the south and west, and Beaufort County to the north. Greenwood was founded in 1820 by John Greenwood and his wife Susannah. The first settler in Greenwood was James Moody, who arrived in 1824. In 1830, Greenwood had a population of 100 people. By 1840, Greenwood's population had grown to 350 people. In 1850, Greenwood had a population of 500 people. By 1860, Greenwood's population had increased to 1,000 people. In 1865, Greenwood became part of Union State when South Carolina seceded from the United States following the American Civil War. On November 15th of that year, Confederate General Robert Ewell led an attack against Union forces at New Market Hill near Palmetto Court House in Uniontown while most residents were evacuated for safety reasons due to fears of anattack or bombardment from Confederate forces nearby In 1870-71 during Reconstruction after the end of the Civil War (1861-1865), many black men were brought into white households as apprentices working on farms or construction projects; this practice continued until about 1930 when it was prohibited by law

Greenwood grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its natural resources and its position as a transportation hub on the Savannah River. The town's growth slowed during the early 21st century due to population decline and environmental problems. However, Greenwood has begun to experience an upswing in recent years, thanks in part to its role as a host city for the 2018 World Cup and its relationship with nearby larger cities such as Columbia and Greenville. Greenwood was founded by white people who named it after Greenwood Forest, located near the present day city of Spartanburg. The first settler at Greenwood was Captain James Aiken, who arrived in 1824 with his family from Augusta County, Georgia. Captain Aiken surveyed land around what is now Greenwood and names his community after himself and his family’s home county: “Aiken” being one of several local terms used for this area at that time. The first store opened in 1830 at what is now US Highway 70/SR 512 (now US Highway 278) just east of downtown Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department station #1 (now situated within City limits). This store operated until about 1840 when an addition was made to the building which served as both a grocery store and post office. In 1840-1841 mail service from Greenville via boat transported goods between Greenville and Charleston; however, by 1845 this service had been discontinued because of lack of interest from travelers along the riverboat corridor. The opening of US Highway 278 caused increased traffic through downtown Greenwood so a second store was built on Main Street across from McClure Park where it operated until 1951 when it burned down leaving only ruins behind In 1865 Drayton Waddell purchased land adjacent to what is today known as Government House Road extending into modern day Union Chapel which he called "Waddell's Garden." There he started planting cotton ginners' seedlings which would eventually produce more than 100 acres (40 hectares) of cottonproductive land including 11 miles (17 kilometers) of railroads connecting Jarratt Landing with Savannah below . Waddell also constructed three brick schools - one for girlsinder school enrollment began on November 15th 1865 - one for boysinder school enrollment began on December 12th 1865 - while maintaining house & gardens on Government House Road . By 1870 there were 20 brick buildings housing over 400 students with many classrooms doubling as workshops; 3 brick hospitals – 2 ellipses – 2 stories high each - were also built during this time period….At this time there were 1 mile (1 kilometer) long main street leading through downtown with all public buildings facing it……..This period saw rapid development brought about by railroad developments…..Downtown businesses flourished including stores, hotels/motels etc., banks etc., Elks Lodge #2 still stands today
Greenwood was founded in 1795 by a group of farmers and planters. The town became a resting place for the traveling clergy during the Revolutionary War, and later became a center for cotton production. Greenwood developed into an important economic and social center during the antebellum period. The community experienced several major tragedies, including the 1844 Maury County tornado that destroyed many homes, businesses, and churches; the 1865 Greenville-Forsyth County earthquake; and the 1927 white flight from Greenwood after its integration into South Carolina.
