Greenwood is a small town in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Charleston. The population was 1,674 at the 2010 census. Greenwood was founded in 1787 by white refugees from North Carolina who fled to its area during the American Revolution. The first gun shops in Greenwood were established around 1810. It wasn't until 1873 that handgun manufacturer John Brown & Co. opened up shop in what is now known as the Courthouse Square shopping center on Spring Street. In 1898, local blacksmiths formed the NRA to protect their rights as firearms owners and users against discrimination by whites. In 1957, Greenwood became one of thirteen municipalities in South Carolina incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name "Greenwood". Today, Greenwood's economy revolves around manufacturing and service businesses such as carpenters, mechanics and brewers; it also has a few restaurants and small shops focused on wine-making or other agricultural products

Greenwood was founded in 1827 by white men who came from North Carolina. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. The town's name comes from the local green trees that are found throughout its area. The first settlers in Greenwood were white men who had come from North Carolina after the American Revolution. They named their new community Greenwood because they thought it would be clear to anyone looking down on it that they were located in a place called "Greenwood" rather than some other location in South Carolina. Greenwood has been around since 1827, when white men arrived to start a new life in what is now Spartanburg County. The original settlement was just a few homes and log cabins built by pioneers who had come overland from North Carolina during the 1800s attempt to find land grants and homesteads in what is today Spartanburg County. At first, most of these settlers were farmers, but as production increased and transportation became available for goods farther away from home, more people turned their attention to logging and farming near where they lived or worked. In time, Greenwood began to develop into an important agricultural center for southern South Carolina due to its good soil quality and easy access to water resources. The city of Columbia was founded nearby in 1865 by slaveholders looking for a new destination for their African-American slaves following the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on April 12th that year. Many black families decided not to move away from Charleston after learning about opportunities available there instead. As Greenwood developed as an important agricultural center for southern South Carolina, it lost some of its importance because Columbia became much larger and more populous after it moved closer to Interstate 95 traffic while Greenwood remained isolated until suburban development starteduing around 1970s downtown area around Memorial Stadium/University Park

Greenwood was founded in 1811 and named for General Greenwood who helped lead the Confederate army during the American Civil War. It was a part of Spartanburg County until it became an independent municipality in 1895. Greenwood is located on U.S. Route 278 north of Spartanburg and south of Greenville. The first permanent white settler in what would become Greenwood was Major David Dickson who arrived in 1786 with his family from North Carolina. He named his new land around Fort Dobbs after General Nathanael Greene, one of America's most successful generals during the Revolutionary War. Despite some opposition from local Indians, Dickson and his family began farming the area which they divided into three tracts: The Widow's Valley to the east, The Creek Road to the northwest and The Palmetto Courthouse Hill to the south-west. From here they surveyed and platted out their town boundaries which remain today as listed on street names such as Main Street (north), Second Street (south), Third Street (east) and Fourth Street (west). Dickson's home still stands today within walking distance of downtown Greenwood - now known as "The Dickson House" - which served as both a grocery store and post office from 1811 until 1865 when it burned down due to fire codes issued by then-Governor John Kerr III (). In 1892, Greenwood voters passed an ordinance creating municipal government with a Mayor/Council system; this system still remains in place today despite being superseded by city government within 10 years or so... In 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt designated Greenwood "a national center for Negro education" pursuant to Executive Order 8372; this designation led to more African Americans coming to live and work here than any other town or community in South Carolina except perhaps Columbia City Limits! In 1928 Congressman Underwood placed an order for all black soldiers stationed at Ft Moultrie military base be transferred there instead; this order caused great controversy among many whites because it violated existing racial segregation laws at that time... Finally voting occurred on December 5th 1933 resulting in incorporation into Greenville County under terms set forth therein; however much progress had been made since then locally - notably through establishment of our current public library,... A popular attraction near downtown is The Grove that offers live music nightly throughout summer months... Despite some challenges posed by economic recession beginning in 2007-2008, recent growth has seen joblessness rates drop from over 20% pre-recessionary levels to 6%, largely thanks to increased manufacturing opportunities within neighboring communities such as Greenville proper
