Greenwood was first settled in 1764 by the Welsh family of Griffith. The town was named for General James Greenwood who fought against British forces during the American Revolution. The town grew rapidly during the 1820s and 1830s as a result of its location on the Catawba River, which made it an important transportation hub for goods heading to and from Charleston and other southern settlements. Greenwood also became a major center of cotton production in the early 1800s. During the American Civil War, Greenwood was briefly evacuated by Union forces in 1861 before returning to its original status as a military garrison. In 1865, following South Carolina's secession from the United States, Greenwood reverted back to its prior role as a small farmers' town. However, economic prosperity declined beginning in the 1870s as prices for goods exported to Great Britain soared due to new railway connections between Charleston and Liverpool. The town eventually went into decline until it was destroyed by fire in 1892.
