Some of these businesses include: Jethro Gibbs & Son cigars (founded 1849), Witherspoon's Fine Clothing (founded 1867), First National Bank (founded 1870), Southern Railway Depot (opened 1893), and Richardson's Drug Store (established 1898). Today there are several restaurants including True Bite Italian Cafe (opened 2001) and Myrtle Beach Brewing Company which opened in 2007 as one of only three craft breweries located outside of Atlanta USA The community has always been supportive of local government with Mayor Tracey Farmer serving four terms between 2002-2012 and Councilwoman Darlene Pittman serving two terms from 2013-present; both women were originally elected as part of then Republican controlled City Councilmember positions but changed party affiliation upon taking office as City Officials. Despite this support for local government however there have been some issues raised recently such as plans by developer Johnnie Cochran to build a large private school on property adjacent to Greenwood Plantation; this opposition led to protests surrounding Cochran's planned development along with other issues such as increased taxes levied against residents due to recent economic growth within the city limits

Greenwood was founded in the early 1800s by Captain Greenwood and his wife. The first structure in the town was a log cabin, which served as their home until 1798. Captain Greenwood's son, James Greenwood, built the first store in 1814. The store was located on present-day Main Street. In 1827, Captain Greenwood's grandson, John Greenwood, opened the first post office in Hammondsville. In 1868, Captain Greenwood's great-grandson Colonel James Easley bought the land at present-day North Hammondsville and established an agricultural center there. In 1915, General Motors introduced its " Chevrolet" line of cars to Hammondsville. The company built a large factory there and used it to produce more than 100,000 vehicles annually. The site of the current GM plant is now part of Memorial Park Cemetery.
