In recent years, Greenwood has become known as a center for art education with several major art exhibitions taking place each year including "The Great American Art Show" which features local artists every month throughout summertime and "Inklings Gallery", housed inside of an old post office building that serves as their permanent exhibition space since 2007
Greenwood was founded in 1785 by Captain John Greenwood. The town was named after General James "The Hardy" Greenwood, who served in the American Revolution and later became a U.S. Senator from South Carolina. In 1802, Greenwood donated twenty acres of land to the town for use as a park. In 1827, the town voted to name its school after General Andrew Jackson.
