Greenville, South Carolina is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 31,811 at the 2010 census. The downtown area of Greenville is the largest city in Richland County and part of the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area. In addition to its large downtown business district and numerous parks and public works projects, Greenville also has a thriving agricultural sector that employs over 100 people in various industries. The small town's history can be traced back to 1765 when it was founded by white settlers as New London (now associated with Greenville). It changed its name to Greenville on November 3, 1824 after General Andrew Jackson's victory at the Battle of Cowpens. The first post office in Greenville opened on December 2, 1817. By 1840, there were nine settlements in Richland County: Clarksburg (now known as Florence), Dunster (now known as West Columbia), Marlboro (later known as Corinth), New London (later known as Greenville), Pawleys Island (later known as Beaufort), rural Surry (later Pleasure Island) and Washington Springs. At that time there were only three churches in Greenville- First Presbyterian Church which had been built around 1785 and moved from Clarksburg; Second Presbyterian Church which had been built around 1800 but burned down in 1827; and Third Methodist Episcopal Church which was built about 1830 but burned down about 1850. Agriculture began to take off in earnest in central South Carolina during this time with cotton plantations becoming increasingly important for local economies due to their high yields and low inputs costs compared to other types of crops grown elsewhere. Greenville is a small city in South Carolina, United States. The population was 14,901 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Greenville County and part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Greenville was John Smith in 1699. The town was platted on August 12, 1834 by order of Governor Andrew Johnson as part of a land grant to General Johnston from President James K. Polk. In 1893, Coca Cola began production within walking distance of downtown Greensboro when they leased land from J P Morgan for their new bottling plant complex that would become known as Coca-Cola Park today. Coca Cola products have been produced here ever since and continue to be sold throughout the greater Greensboro area today through local distributorships including Appalachian Beverage Corporation (ABC) who operate both retail stores and distribution centers throughout eastern North Carolina and northwestern Georgia

Greenville was founded in 1795 by Colonel James Tryon and the town became a stop on the Underground Railroad. The Union Army burned Greenville in 1865, but the town was rebuilt and renamed to Greenville after General Robert E. Lee.
