Greenville, South Carolina is a town located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 20,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Asheboro-Brierfield metropolitan area. The land that makes up Greenville was first occupied by people who lived near what is now Columbia, South Carolina. The early settlers were white men and women who had come to this area as slaves or indentured servants from Africa and Europe. They cleared and planted crops and built homes in small villages that they called "Cities of the Plain." Over time, more people arrived from other parts of the United States, England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Denmark and Sweden. In 1820orate General James Aiken founded Fort Moultrie on an island in Ashley River about two miles (3 km) upstream from present day Greenville. This fort served as a base for operations during the Creek War (1811-1812). In 1825 George Washington leased what is now downtown Greenville from tribal leaders for $10 per year with the understanding that it would be used only for military purposes and not as a commercial center. At first there were few buildings or businesses in downtown Greenville because most of the land was forested and unusable until someone clearing away trees found valuable coal seams under the earth! On July 4th 1830 local citizens erected a large granite memorial to their fallen compatriots Main Street between High Street and US 1 which still stands today! The town's history can be traced back to its foundation by James Aiken in 1820 when he founded Fort Moultrie on Ashley River about 2 miles (3 km) upstream from present day Greenville. As America began to grow increasingly complex politically over time economic growth followed suit with new businesses popping up all over town starting with blacksmith shops within walking distance of each other! Downtown business started moving out into surrounding neighborhoods eventually becoming known as "The Ghetto" because African Americans couldn't own property outside of some specific areas like uptown Charleston until after World War II!

The first permanent European settlers in Greenville were families from England who arrived in 1795. They called their new land "King's County." The British government assigned each colony a fixed number of acres (or square mile) and these colonists built houses and plantations to support themselves and their families. In 1819, King's County was merged into Pickens County and the original English colonists were replaced by Scots-Irish immigrants. In 1829, Greenville became an incorporated town under the name of Greenvilleburgh. On May 15, 1865, it became one of the states' capital cities when South Carolina became a state within the Union.
