Greenville is a town located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2010 census, its population was 21,592. It is the county seat of Pickens County. The town's ZIP code is 29607. Greenville was founded by white slaveholders in 1820 as a plantation town on Hilton Head Island, and became an important center for cotton production in the antebellum period. In 1824, Colonel James Wofford purchased 640 acres (2 km2) of land north of present-day Greenville from Captain Dyer for £5 per acre ($10 per km2). Lieutenant Governor John Cushing designated Greenville as Pickens County’s capital on December 1, 1830; however this designation did not take effect until January 1st of each year thereafter due to lack of funds from Congressional appropriation necessary to support that function at that time. Pickens County originally consisted only of Hilton Head Island; however by 1840 it included all modern-day Pickens County including portions now known as Greenwood Village and Columbia City westward to Myrtle Beach and eastward to Sumter City (the towns within modern day Columbia City).
