The Greenville Rifle and Pistol Club was chartered on February 15, 1892. The club met at the home of Mrs. H. P. Goodloe until 1895 when they relocated to the old Presbyterian church on High Street. The city has been continuously inhabited since 1672 when Englishman Francis Marion arrived on Roanoke Island and named it "Greensboro." When Plantation fever struck Charleston in 1795, Governor Tryon ordered all but 10 whites taken captive to be transported to Carolina with full knowledge that they would die unless they disembarked at some point and got new land or became slaves themselves; only three Africans were sent with them: Rev., Dr., and Mrs.(Fanny) Wright who married into a white family there and died within days of her arrival as did her husband John Charles Wright II soon after their escape from slavery aboard HMS Dolphin off Beaufort County afterchieveing freedom along with 100 others including William Halsey Barron who became the first black American Citizen born in South Carolina by naturalization on December 4th, 1800
