Greenville is a city in South Carolina, United States. The population was 80,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Greenville County. The city was founded in 1795 by planter John Clemson and entrepreneur Isaac Norris as a trading post on the Asiatic trade route between Charleston and Savannah. In 1821, Clemson became known as the "Father of Greenville" when he donated land to make it a town. A cotton gin was built in 1824 by Isaiah Bowman and other entrepreneurs in what is now downtown Greenville to cottonseed oil production from local swampy areas near the present day intersection of Broad Street and Patton Avenue. The first successful bus service in America began serving Greenville on April 15, 1865 with passengers coming from New York City via Greenwood Cemetery for a celebratory dinner sponsored by Confederate General Robert Ewell at his home on Broad Street. A new school building was completed in 1871 which served as both primary and secondary school until 1941 when it became part of the University of South Carolina main campus. In 1954, Cement Manufacturing Company merged with Textile Corporation of America (TECA) to become one of the world's leading manufacturers of high-quality cements including mortarboard, concrete blocks, aggregate products and pavement sealants. TECA's factories remain active today within the boundaries of Greenville proper while operations are conducted out-of-town under various corporate names including American Concrete Industries Inc., Cement Products International Inc., Texaco Cement Corp., and Gulf Oil Refining Plant cementification subsidiary GeoCEMENT plc. On September 16th, 2008 Teca Coal Mine closed after producing coal for over sixty years

Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, located in the Greenville-Asheboro-High Point metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 128,871. The name "Greenville" is derived from English settlers' use of "greene", meaning “livable” or “trees that grow well” and "villey", meaning “village” or “township” in reference to their agricultural land around what is now downtown Greenville. The original European settler named Greeneville was Nicholas Greene who arrived on May 2, 1686 with his family from London, England. The early settlement at present day downtown Greenville began as an Indian trading post called Fort Moultrie on Horry County's west bank about where US 21 crosses Dorchester River today. On November 11, 1824 Drury built a small house and store on Broad Street for himself and his family; this became known as the Drury House and remained in operation until 1837 when it burned down due to the elements. On December 10, 1831 John Covington founded what would become known as Atlanta (then spelled Alachua), Georgia after buying 781 acres (291 hectares) of land north of Mobile Bayou near Suwannee River Bridge - which he named after George Washington's headquarters at Mount Vernon during the American Revolution - from Major General James Dunmore under British military occupation during the War of 1812! In 1850 Rev. Samuel Jones moved his church from Columbia to GREENVILLE where he had been pastor since 1847 – moving again in 1870 when Creek Indians attacked white settlers near town limits killing four people including Reverend Jones & two girls age 9 & 10 years old – displacing many more African Americans leading to increased tensions between whites & blacks throughout much of antebellum America! The first black resident OF GREENVILLE was Mrs Aimee Ruddock who moved here from Memphis TN in 1929! Mrs Ruddock established herself as one of THE FIRST BLACK BUSINESS OWNERS IN AMERICA WHEN SHE opened her own grocery store at 309 Union Avenue in GREENVILLE – becoming one of only 4 African American business owners EVER TO OPEN THEIR OWN GAS STATION IN AMERICA BEFORE THE Sixties!!!
Greenville was founded by the Cherokee in 1755. The town was named for Captain John Green, who led a party of British soldiers from South Carolina to found it. Greenville became a major slave market for Africans in the early 1800s.
