Greenville is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 10,507 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1835 and named for General Francis Marion of the United States Army. Greenville is the county seat and largest city in Spartanburg County. Greenville was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1835. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Ashley River and its role as a transportation hub for goods traveling between Spartanburg and other counties in South Carolina. In 1850, Greenville became an incorporated municipality with a population of 711. In 1906, Greenville merged with neighboring Uniontown to form the city of Greenville proper. In 1949, Greenville established itself as an international center for oil exploration after developing significant reserves of shale gas deposits beneath its surface. As production increased, so did traffic to and from the city; by 2001, Greenwood Avenue had become one of South Carolina's most heavily traveled streets. This growth led to problems that began to be addressed soon after: excessive truck noise pollution caused by large petroleum productions facilities along Interstate 85; green fields filled with pipe-smoking oil workers; and blighted neighborhoods near major intersections becoming known as "gas towns". The City Council passed Ordinance No 5-2002 which requires all new restaurants/cafes opened after September 1st must have wind turbines installed on their rooflines or within six feet horizontally of their roof line if they are open to customers without paying those fees assessed against any business that does not have this feature (currently only 1% of businesses in SC do). Another ordinance stating that no Excise Tax can be assessed on gasoline products bought at convenience stores located within 500 feet (150 m) of any school will go into effect January 1st 2020
Greenville was founded in 1795 by Captain James Wilkinson and his crew of 168 men. The town was named after the natural oasis of Gregg Island, which is located in the area today. Greenville grew quickly thanks to its location on a navigable waterway and its access to white soil for farming. The town's first store opened in 1802. In 1851, the town became part of the newly formed Union Territory of South Carolina. The territory was renamed Alabama in 1865, when Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Greenville's growth stopped due to low population rates and lack of resources until the late 19th century when a wave of immigration arrived from Europe followed by an increase in industry and commerce. In 1892, Greenville became one of the cities that merged with Columbia to form Columbia University. The city has since experienced a series of growth opportunities as it becomes an important center for education and business within South Carolina and beyond. In recent years, Greenville has seen increased development around its downtown core as new housing developments are completed or announced; this has led to increased traffic congestion on some streets near campus.
