So Clinton selected Greenville as one of his sites for this new post; he named it after Major John Green who had helped him win that battle at Yorktown three years earlier. Greenville became an important center during the antebellum period because it housed Confederate forces during the Civil War – most notably General Robert Easley’s headquarters – and because its location made it accessible from Charleston, which was then the capital city of southern United States. They named their new settlement "Greeneville" after nearby Savannah river which they thought resembled green trees. The colonists built homes and stores around what is now downtown Greenville, soon becoming one of the most important settlements on the eastern seaboard from whence many Americans began their journey westward during the early days of American development. In 1820, following England's victory at Waterloo, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his forces southward beyond lines established by Union General Ulysses S Grant near Cantonment Landings in Georgia and make his way through Augusta County towards Charlotteburg before turning east along I-95 towards Richmond towards Petersburg Junction where he expected to cross into North Carolina; this decision left open many questions about our country's future strategic location within secessionist territory while also placing much stress upon our military commanders who were able to evaluate all potential contingencies without giving undue consideration to political implications or popular sentiment On April 12th (the day before Virginia's Declaration of Independence), General Ewell abandoned his plans for crossing into North Carolina and instead continued down I-95 until reaching Richmond which he entered on April 16th just ahead of Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant who had been sent there specifically to stop him Both Confederate Generals had made similar decisions based upon incomplete information at that time; however given recent events it is interesting that only one survived and became nationally celebrated while another failed spectacularly . In short despite some very serious missteps both generals demonstrated notable leadership qualities when called upon whereas Lincoln ultimately made better choices about how best To confront returning Confederates later on
