This led to British possession of much of coastal Georgia and South Carolina until 1814 when United States acquisition became effective. Greenville grew rapidly during the early 1800s as cotton plantations were established in this area by nobility and slaveowners eager to cash in on newly discovered cotton fields south of Charleston. By 1824, there were more than 1,000 slaves working in greenfields around town. Cotton production declined during the 1830s following an unsuccessful attempt by American planters to establish a railroad through this region which resulted in social unrest among black Africans who had been employed on these plantations. With repeal of slavery throughout much of America in 1848-49 brought about by Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (January 29th), many African Americans left their former owners behind for opportunities within new nations or states where slavery was abolished earlier that year. These rifles were called "t-shirts" because they were made to be worn as a piece of clothing. Rifle manufacturers started producing these firearms in two different styles: the barrel was allowed to hang down below the shoulder and it was common for rifles to have an extra band around the waistband on either side of the firearm. In 1827, Benjamin Butler developed a design for a rifle that would become known as the Butler Model No.1. This rifle featured a barrel that hung down below the shoulder and it had an extra band around the waistband on either side of the firearm. The popularity of this new style of rifle led to other manufacturers producing their own versions of this type of firearm, which became known as "t-shirt guns." Greenville is a city in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 21,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. Greenville was founded on December 3, 1818 by General Andrew Jackson as a trading post on the Wekesha River between Hilton Head and Savannah. The town name comes from "Greensboro", located in North Carolina adjacent to what would become Greenville when that state became part of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Greenville in 1821. By 1825, all but two families living in present-day Greenville had left for unknown reasons. In 1827 Confederate forces burned down the courthouse and数百人 were arrested for looting and burning it while national guards patrolled outside. soon after this event many people who lived near Columbia learned about South Carolina's potential to be a hotbed of slavery and organized themselves into committees to boycott cotton shipments coming into Columbia because they felt that slavery was an unconstitutional practice not sanctioned by Congress (the so-called "National Slave trade" or "Cotton Code"). On January 1, 1830, Greenwood also became a city under its own charter with a population of 25 people (it had been annexed by Spartanburg from neighboring Burke County on November 17, 1830). On May 15, 1840 John Wesley Hardin founded Broad Ripple Academy which served as one of America's earliest schools for African Americans until it closed in 1865 due to high tuition prices ($3 per term). A large cotton plantation called White Hall was located east of downtown Greenville before it was sold off beginning around 1860s and later razed along with other plantations following sectional warfare over cotton production within states such as Kentucky/Tennessee which led to increased violence throughout much of 1861-1865
Greenville was founded in 1755 by Captain James Ogle. The city was named for Colonel John Green, who had been a Commander of the Continental Army and Surveyor-General during the American Revolution. Greenville became a state in 1841.
