Greenville is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 25,879 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in York County and one of three towns in the county (the other two are Greenville proper and Sumter). The town's name comes from Englishman Major General James A. Grant who fought alongside General Andrew Jackson during the American Civil War and later became president of Tennessee. The first people to live in what is now Greenville were hunters, gatherers, and fishermen who travelled along the coast for food. One of the first white men to settle here was Captain John Dickson who built a cabin on Hatteras Island in 1764-65. By 1800, there were over 100 white families living hereabouts. In 1828 Greenville incorporated as a city under a state law that allowed incorporation by cities with a population of more than 10 inhabitants without vote or consent of all residents therein; this city charter lasted until 1868 when it was replaced by an act establishing Greenville as an unincorporated community within York County subject to all local laws and regulations except those governing Charleston which had been repealed by state law at that time. Greenville's growth began slowly but steadily over the next several decades as farmers moved into areas such as Pee Dee River and upper Ashley River valleys looking for cheap land to cultivate cotton plantations; these early settlers played an important role in developing Greenville into a small town today. In 1907 "The Encyclopedia Britannica" placed Greenville among "America's Hundred Towns", ranking it eighteenth out of U.S. towns with a population over 1,000 according to their article "100 America’s Most Important Cities". During World War II, many locals worked on military bases around Charleston or served in various capacities throughout the war including working on fuel refineries near Greensboro/High Point (now Winston-Salem) while also serving with Army Air Forces stationed at major airfields scattered throughout North Carolina and South Carolina; some members of the local military still live in parts of North Carolina today thanks in part to their wartime serviceites status quo intact following World War II up until 1957 when federal troops left coastal NC permanently leaving most civilians unprotected from aerial bombing raids..
Greenville was founded in 1749 by Captain John Green and his wife, Patience. In 1810, the town became a state capital. In 1861, Confederate forces burned Greenville to the ground. The Union forces later recaptured the town and renamed it after General Robert E. Lee.
