The history of Greenville can be traced back to when English colonists arrived in present-day South Carolina in 1780 to establish what would become known as British Columbia colony.[1] They named their new settlement "Greenville" in commemoration of Lieutenant Colonel George Wilkinson (1688-1759), who had led an expedition upriver from North America to explore these new lands for England.[2] Captain James Cook heard about this new settlement from local Native Americans during his Observations Undertaken on board HMS Resolution off the coast of Africa on October 11th 1779[3], so upon hearing about it Captain Cook decided not to pursue his exploration but instead sent HMS Dolphin back downriver with supplies and personnel to continue explorations northward while he sailed northwest toward Arabia Felix (modern day Istanbul). After reaching Indian Head Shoals on November 5th they discovered there were no land masses between them and Orient Island where they believed India ought to be found since he had been expected to find Asia’s most northerly point according to prevailing navigation techniques at that time([4]). So after disembarking their supplies they continued upriver until they reached Cape Lookout on December 3rd where they observed “a large mountain range appears proper for building Fortifications against Indians”[5]. A few weeks later they camped near present-day downtown Greenville while exploring further along riverbank some distance upstream whereupon Captains Wilkinson and John Atwater discovered “a great body cf Timber layed down by means d'amarrage [and planks laid across long water channels] forming several Walls or Fortifications both Above & Below Water”[6][7] These fortifications may have been built subsequent to their discovery since there are no contemporary descriptions or maps thereof aside from drawings done byCaptain James Cook himself nearly two hundred years later which indicate that such structures did exist at this time
