Goose Creek is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by British colonists in 1785 and named after Goose Creek in Northumberland County, England. The first post office opened in 1812 and the first store was built in 1814. In 1837, a canal was dug through the town and it became a general store stop on the route between Columbia and Charleston. The community grew rapidly during the early 1800s as planters created plantations here to produce cotton for export. By 1830, Goose Creek had a school, church, jail, arsenal (the only one of its kind east of the Mississippi River), two stores, four families with six slaves each and over 100 residents. By 1861, when Confederate forces sacked Columbia while retreating from Battle of Fort Sumter, Goose Creek had quadrupled its population to over 270 people. That year also saw an important event for goose creek when John Crain organized what would become later known as The Three Graces around this time: A women's choir called "The Three Graces" which toured throughout southern America performing religious music; an amateur theatrical group called "The Gossamer Web"; and a men's basketball team which played against local high schools before disbanding several years later due to financial difficulties
