On July 5, 1851, a group of men from Goose Creek County purchased a piece of land that would later become the town of Goose Creek. The men were inspired by the idea of having an easily accessible place to work and live. They named their new town after themselves, Goose Creek. The first store in town was opened in 1853. By 1865, the population had reached 100 people and the town was renamed Goose Creek City.
Goose Creek is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,913 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Spartanburg County and also its largest city. The town proper has a total area of 23 square miles (59 km2). The first permanent settler in what would become Goose Creek was John Wilkinson in 1811. Wilkinson named his new community after his brother-in-law, George Washington Wilkinson. By 1826, all of the original land within present-day Goose Creek had been surveyed and sold to make way for plantations. One such plantation owner, James Fenton, donated 60 acres (24 ha) of land to the town in 1827 as part of an effort to encourage settlers to move into his township. After years of growth and development as a small agricultural village located on high ground overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway and surrounding countryside, Goose Creek relocated its City Hall from downtown Spartanburg to its current location on Belk Road in 1954 following annexation by neighboring Greenville. Today, Goose Creek is known for its rich history – including significant contributions by African Americans – as well as its vibrant cultural scene which includes several theaters and two professional sports teams: the Spartanburg Strikers baseball team and the Highlanders basketball team. In 1824-25 General John Covington’s Second Battalion US Volunteer Infantry participated in the American Civil War while stationed at Forts Jackson and Sumter on Yorktown Peninsula near Charleston Harbor as part of Jubal Early’s Confederate Army under General Robert Ewell Sr.. The Battle of Gettysburg occurred on July 4th 1863 when Confederate forces attacked Union troops near Cemetery Hill under command of General Robert Ewell Jr.. A total of 3200 soldiers died during this battle with over two-thirds being southern African Americans enlisted into Confederate units such as Early’s 1st Brigade commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Colston III known as “Thempster” after his plantation home located just north east of Gettysburg called “Thompkinsville” which served as headquarters for both Early's brigade and VIII Corps under Majadier General Pendergast during this engagement..
