As goose hunting became more popular during the early 20th century, hunters set up various huts around Goose Creek to catch geese while they flew over or landed on their properties for food or feathers (a practice called "gathering"). Thousands of geese frequented these areas throughout the years; however, due to farming practices at the time, many of these birds never nested successfully and eventually died out (some individuals managed to keep some).
