Goose Creek is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in this area were white men from Georgia who arrived around 1814. They named their new village Goose Creek after their geese which roamed the area and nested on the high banks of the creek. The first school in the community was built in 1822 and it served as a church for many years before being torn down in 1905 to make way for an office complex. A post office called Goose Creek was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1903, a road was constructed through Goose Creek settlement that became known as "The High Road". This roadway served as an access route for farmers and others travelling to nearby towns such as Rocky Mount or Laurens during those early days of postal service delivery. Thanks to its proximity to Columbia University and other major metropolitan areas during the late 19th century, Goose Creek experienced rapid growth both economically and culturally during this period; however, by 1920 it had practically disappeared as a result of World War I allied bombing raids on Charleston which destroyed much of downtown business district including much of its commercial infrastructure. During these times there were several attempts by local officials to revive goose creek's fortunes; however all without success until more recently when numerous restoration projects have been undertaken throughoutmuchofthevillageincludingitshistoric buildingsandacresoflandarounditthathavebeen restoredtotheir former glory.

The first settlers were white men who arrived in 1814 and named their town after Goose Creek in Scotland. In 1865, the name of Goose Creek was changed to Spartanburg to reflect the new county line. The first post office in goose creek was established on March 1, 1822. A store and blacksmith shop were built there by James Tuggle. The first school was started in 1824 by John Fenton and taught reading and arithmetic to children of local farmers. A gristmill was built in 1827 by Elisha Nance and included a saw mill that produced lumber for buildings and fences around the community until 1902 when it became part of the Spartanburg Corporation mill complex. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early passed through Goose Creek on his way from Columbia to duty with the Union army outside of Petersburg. He stopped at our town for lunch on his way south before continuing on his march northward. His troops had captured many supplies along the route including cornmeal and other food items which they distributed among their units enroute to Richmond Heights Cemetery where they buried thousands of Union soldiers during the battle for control of Virginia Beach on April 12-13, 1865. A Post Office called "Goosecreek" remained open until 1907 when it became part of Spartanburg County's "Central Station". In 1912, a new Post Office building (which still stands) replaced an earlier structure that burned down several years prior; this building housed both offices until 1985 when it became home to the current Spartanburg County Courthouse Annex which also houses municipal courtrooms and sheriff's deputies' substation #2 as well as various other government offices such as tax assessor/collector services (currently handled out of Bladenboro). There have been many political changes occuring within Goose Creek over time: from two-man Farmer-Labor governments through two one-man Republican administrations before finally becoming an elected municipality with three commissioners starting in 1994 under then Mayor Julius Phillips; all three commissioners continue working today as trustees or directors with responsibility for governing aspects like zoning ordinances & planning applications etc., while also maintaining public access thereto via website & phone checkerboard system - all without ever stepping foot inside those government buildings! So much has transpired here since its incorporation into what is now known as “city” status back in 1899 that even comprehensive histories/biographies would be incomplete without mention or listing some notable event(s) hereabouts! However given our focus herein upon history & culture rather than contemporary affairs (&Politics!), we will only touch upon a few specific historical highlights HEREINWITH… ;)
