A post office was established here in 1825, and by 1830 the community had a population of 20 residents. By 1840, however, Goose Creek had grown to 100 residents and soon became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1865 Confederate General Robert Easley made his headquarters here before retreating to Union lines near Elizabeth City. In 1870 the community had reached 1,000 residents; by 1910 it had shrunk to 771 people but still boasted a public library, five churches (twoMethodist and four Baptist), six schools (one primary and four secondary), one printing press (the Courier Press Company), two newspapers (The News-Letter and The Post-Circulation Gazette), and three banks (Fulton Trust Company, First National Bank of Spartanburg County, and United States Savings Bank). During World War II many local businesses manufacturing munitions produced materials for use in Nazi Germany or Japan; these businesses closed during the war but reopened shortly after hostilities ended as new companies were formed in their place.
