On February 14, 1865, African American slaves working on nearby plantations were set upon by white men while they rested after dinner; nine men were killed and six taken captive as a result (the event is known as "The Massacre of Negroes at Goose Creek"). This event led to increased tension between black residents of Spartanburg County and those living in nearby Goose Creek over issues such as job discrimination and access to education opportunities for black students. Despite this problem, relations between the two communities improved over time because both sides realized that they shared many common interests: blacks wanted an equal opportunity to success within society while whites saw potential economic advantages for themselves if they could work collaboratively with minority groups
