Goose Creek is a small, rural town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. Goose Creek is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Goose Creek" was derived from the Chickasaw word gooche which means "a fast stream." In 1792, General James Dunbar marched his army through Goose Creek Valley and upon sighting a herd of geese he ordered his men to shoot at them without wounding any of the birds. This practice continued until 1812 when General Andrew Jackson halted his army on the banks of Duck River and demanded that all military supplies be brought overland to him instead of being transported by horses and mules. As a result of this event, Goose creek became known as "Jackson's watercourse." The first settler in what is now Goose Creek was John Cagle who arrived in 1760. He built a cabin on present day Upperville Road near where it intersects Highway 21 today. After several years he sold his land to Walter Settle who built a mill on the creek for grinding corn and other agricultural purposes. In addition to their milling activities, Settle andhis family also ran an inn called The Gullah Inn which stood on current day Main Street across from Upperville Elementary School until it burned down in 1951. A new inn called The Chicken House replaced it before it too was destroyed by fire in 1984. In 1814, Colonel Thomas Hindman bought some 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Goose Creek from Daniel Boone for $4 per acre ($/acre). Hindman named his tract Turtle Mountain because he believed that turtle eggs would hatch into turtles if left untreated on cold winter days near rivers or streams during runoff season. Hindman used this property for farming operations until about 1827 when he sold it to Major John Brownson for $10 per acre ($/acre). Brownson developed potatoes, apples and other crops there until about 1830 when he abandoned the area due to local troubles including Indian warfare and gold discoveries along Duck River outside Greenville proper.. He then returned home with three families: The Pickens brothers (George Washington Pickens Sr., Ebenezer Pickens Jr., William Pickens), Captain Elijah White (Captain Elijah White),and Mrs Deborah Moody (Deborah Moody) who arrived December 5th 1830 while they were traveling through Greenville en route to Charleston via Pee Dee River ferry crossing; they had been driven out of Georgia by Governor Johnston's forces after having refused allegiance to him following their defeat at Yellow Plantation two months earlier .. They settled down among us about 1840 In 1861, Confederate soldiers under General Robert Ewell attacked Union troops commanded by Lieutenant Colonel JNO SIMMONS northeast ofpresent-day Goose Creek using artillery located along Duck River just upstream from where its confluence with Elk Lake lays today.. From this point forward much conflict followed between Unionists and Confederates around DuckRiver vicinity; eventually leading up to full military engagement October 16th 1865 known as Battle Of duck river . Some 400 casualties were reported with no significant gain for either side although Confederate general Jubal Early claimed credit for victory later that year.. It has been generally agreed that battle resulted from misunderstanding caused by mistaken orders given by Generals Alexander McDowell & Richard Butler during night march southward up river .. postbattle surveys showed high degreeOf destruction & Casualtiesamongst both armies with infantry only taking few losses
