The name "Goose Creek" comes from the fact that there were many geese living near the creek's outlet on Gooch Road. In 1851, a store and stage stop called Goose Creek Station were built along Duck River Road east of town; this depot served as an important link between Spartanburg and surrounding counties until it closed in 1960. In 1863, Confederate General Jubal Early made his way down Goose Creek Valley and attacked Union forces stationed at Rocky Mount about northwest of town. Early's troops destroyed several homes and murdered many people before being driven back by Union reinforcements under General Pemberton. Some residents of Goose Creek reported seeing or hearingstrosities such as giant spiders during this attack; however, no physical evidence has ever been found to support these allegations. A new post office was established at Goose Creek in 1875; it functioned until 1907 when it became known as Manning Post Office after its first occupant, Drury Manning (1822-1900). A grocery store and feed lot were also built around this time along Duck River Road northeast of town; these businesses operated until they were closed in 1959 due to economic hardship caused by changes in farming methods. In 1916, two churches – First Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church – were built north of town on land donated by Jno Hargrave (1853-1920). These institutions continued to serve their congregations until 1951 when both churches merged into one entity known as First Presbyterian Church/Southside Methodist Episcopal Chapel which remains today as one of the largest Protestant denominations in Spartanburg County! During World War II, many farmers turned to coal mining for their wartime needs because there was no other available source of income. This led to environmental damage since mines produced large amounts of ash which had a significant impact on local waterways and soil: over time some geysers have formed near Goose Creek due to groundwater withdrawal for mine purposes; these eruptions are now considered tourist attractions based on their scale and beauty! One particularly popular attraction is a water slide located adjacent to Mine Hill Recreation Area just outside city limits: visitors can take a ride up the slide or walk around its banks while views across Duck River can be seen from atop its slopes!
