Goose (1795-1865), an American soldier and Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War and later served as a U.S. Senator from South Carolina. Goose Creek beganpopulating in 1814 when families from surrounding farms relocated to what is now Goose Creek Township beginning with John Doe 1 and his family. By 1840, there were 10 families living here; by 1850, there were 30 residents living here. In 1871, most of the land around Goose Creek was sold to Englishman Jno Wylie for $1,500 cash and title to 6 acres (2 hectares). In 1865, General James H. Goose died during the American Civil War at age 38 after leading one of several Confederate armies eastward into Maryland while under Union command on April 12th within sight of Fort Sumter; posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day despite being saved only by comparative obscurity due to poor health at the time he achieved it The town name may be derived from this event or from General James H., who many people believe originated in what is now Goose creek township but whose remains are still unidentified

Goose Creek is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Goose Creek was James Crouse in 1827. He and his wife Marilla established a log cabin on the banks of Duck River. They had two children, named John and Sarah. After few years, they moved to a better location and built their own cabin on an island in Duck River near where current day Uptown sits today. Their daughter Sarah married David Hightower who also founded what is now known as downtown Spartanburg. In 1830, James Crouse's grandson John bought land from David Hightower for $110 cash and built a home there which he called "Crouse's Castle". The original structure still stands today! In 1835, Joseph Cooke homesteaded land adjacent to what is now Goose Creek off of present day Gooch Road and erected a two story wood frame farmhouse that still stands today! This building served as the town meeting house until it burned down in 1903: according to one account it caught on fire while being razed to make way for new construction; however another account claims that someone set the barn alight before it could be demolished so burning continued until all evidence was destroyed! In 1840, Lawrence Skinner purchased some additional land from Joseph Cooke and began farming there with his family until 1851 when he sold all his holdings to Atherton Wofford Jr.. Atherton Wofford Sr., father of future Congressman Atherton Wofford III (1875-1948), also took over some of Lawrence Skinner's holdings which he renamed "Goose Creek". From here on out, Goose Creek would be known as Atherton Wofford Sr.'s plantation home/townsite. When General Jno Easley became governor of South Carolina in 1871, he ordered all plantations closed down in order to reduce their dependence upon slave labor during wartime efforts; however due to financial difficulties ensuing from this decree many plantations reopened but only those located within reach of Spartanburg County remained operational by 1880 Due primarily due to exports generated by these operations many residents decided not return home following Easley's departure However several families did move back into town after acquiring parcels or titles deeds adjoining property they had left behind Many people involved with these events would continue living there through much later periods including Robert Rankin (1900-1964) who represented Goose Creek on the Spartanburg County Board of Commissioners during World War II During Reconstruction era (1870-1877), local whites formed committees composed mostly of men interested in getting black vote against reopening old plantation systems were elected officials such as Trustee Alexander Crumpacker (1878-1920) who unsuccessfully ran for office against incumbent John Denton (Republican). Crumpacker stated "I never voted against [the reopening] because I didn't want colored folks around me", illustrating how deeply divided white vs black sentiment was at this time Additionally during this time period several businesses were established throughout town including Poultry & Eggs Factory operated by Fenton Gorman (originally German born) which merchandise included eggs produced by both blacks & whites; paper mills started up soon afterwards along with gristmills providing grinding materials for various household needs; steamboats brought produce & lumber directly into town from surrounding counties As well as shoeshine parlors opened up enabling citizens accesso
