Goose Creek is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2000 census. The town was founded in 1837 and named for James Fenton Goose Creek. The first post office in Goose Creek was established on November 15, 1837, by J.M.Fenton and Wm.Bennett. A store and hotel were built soon after by Johnnie and Sarah Latham, who operated it until 1851 when they moved to Greendale because of the hostility between the two townships that surrounded them. The first school in Goose Creek was built on December 3, 1838 by Cephus Longstreet and Heman Whitaker. There were no public schools until 1861 when a subscription drive resulted in the erection of a schoolhouse which served as a community center from 1861-1875 before it burned down during an anti-slavery campaign against the Latham family. In 1865 General Pemberton ordered all white citizens of Spartanburg County to leave their homes except for military personnel necessary for duty; this order caused many farmers to flee to Goose Creek where they remained until 1865 when they were ordered back into their homes again by General Pemberton. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 many people returned home but about 1000 black refugees continued living there for another year or so until 1919 when they left due to racially segregated housing policies being implemented at that time by Charleston City government A post office called "Gooch" was established at Goose creek on March 16th 1886 by Jno Tatum with Srno Moultrie as postmaster The population of Goose creek increased steadily through the 19th century reaching its peak around 1910 with over 4500 inhabitants In 1912 however there was also an increase in crime rates as prohibition became law making alcohol more accessible It decreased gradually through most of the 20th century although there has been occasional high numbers such as 1951 when over 6000 people lived in goose creek
Goose Creek was named for the geese that used to live in the area. The first white man to visit Goose Creek was James Alexander Gray in 1795.
