In 1865, General James Gaffney arrived in South Carolina with his brigade during the Civil War to help fight against Confederate forces while also engaging in trade with them along the way. After fighting through Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign he returned home victorious but died soon thereafter at age 44 while leading an attack against Fort Sumter outside Charleston Harbor (now Savannah). His death marked an end to hostilities between Confederate States of America and their southern allies within our state; this event helped bring about Reconstruction which ended slavery within our borders (though some African Americans did continue working below ground). In 1861, General Robert Ewell's Confederate Army invaded North Carolina during the American Civil War and pillaged through Sumter County. When Union forces arrived at nearby Fort Fisher on December 12th, 1861 they discovered that Kirby Hall had been destroyed by Confederate artillery fire; however, they were able to retake it two days later after successful raids by Union troops encountering friendly Indian warriors raiding adjacent settlements along Uptown Road (later State Route 221). In 1865 General Jubal Early's raid into North Carolina resulted in widespread destruction throughout much of the state including parts of Sumter County; however, Lt Colonel John Crouch led a small detachment of soldiers from Gaffney through these devastating attacks to support Early's retreating army on January 10th offurking at Gastonville Mountain outside of Columbia instead of reaching their destination due to bad weather conditions. By 1870 there were only 350 residents living in Gaffney with most residents working on farms outside of town or taking part in local businesses such as post office and cattle auctioning operations conducted at Newell’s Mill which still stands today across from Main Street). On November 5th 1870 Hosea Bicknell married Esther Jane Wheeler at Church Hill Methodist Episcopal Church; this marriage marked the first time black people had ever officiated at an Anglican church in Sumter County.
