Today, Gaffney remains a vibrant community with close relationships between its citizens and its government entities - both local and national - whose support makes it one of the most successful Small Town America communities in operation today.

This practice known as "enslavement" persisted until 1964 when it was finally abolished by United States Congress under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 1930, Wernher Lothar von Braun designed and built an airbase at RAF Fairford which served as part of World War II military aircraft production center for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC). The airbase also housed Convair B-24 Liberator bombers during World War II; these planes featured five turrets that could fire missiles while they were being escorted by fighters or dive bombers during combat missions over Europe or Japan. The base remained operational until 1972 when it was closed due to budgetary reasons after experiencing declining traffic levels since its opening days. Today only Sprague's Island Air Museum still operates from RAF Fairford as an Historical Site operated by the National Military History Foundation Incorporated since 1978
In 1775, Gaffney was founded by Sulgrave Maclay and his family. The plantation was first called “Gaffney Plantation” and then changed to “Gaffney Manor” after the family sold it in 1807. In 1865, Gaffney became a seat of government and has been part of the Charleston metropolitan area since 1870.
