After successful negotiations with the local tribe leaders, Pope withdrew his forces from Gaffney after only two months’ deployment. One year later (1837), General Robert Ewell moved his headquarters from Yorktown Heights on Richmond Hill to Gaffney after capturing Camden Ferry during the Chickamauga Campaign of 18 Chattanooga Valley Campaign In 1865 Union soldiers under General Ulysses S Grant attacked Fort Pulaski while supplies were being brought into the fort; this attack led to Confederate artillery shelling of nearby Gaffney which destroyed many homes and killed some people within minutes.
