In 1865 Union General John Crouch burned most of downtown Gaffney when he moved his army headquarters from New Bern to Columbia during the Civil War. Crouch's cavalry group camped outside of town while they prepared their campaign against Confederate General Pemberton around nearby Greenwood Village and Fayetteville Hundred two miles east of Gaffney on Highway 28 southwest of Columbia. Aftermath: A few buildings were saved and restored as part of a project known as "The restoration of downtown Gaffney" that began in 1988 and ended in 2009; many others were lost or destroyed within the firestorm that consumed much of this central city during the American Civil War Era." In 1898–99 Wofford College (later Clemson University) built its first dormitory west side Main Street between Columbia Avenue and Old Fort Hill Road; this building still stands today as Clemson Hall on Main Street across from Wofford’s main campus building opposite Presbyterian Church (now Brown Chapel). In 1928 the new Roper High School was completed southeast corner Fourth Street between Lexington Avenue and US 1 just south of what are now Justin Timberlake Drive (now Interstate 85) with additions including an auditorium/hallway/parking lot addition later called “Chessington Hall” after Al Chesson, then head custodian at Wofford College who donated land for this purpose."
