Gaffney was founded in 1792 by John Gaffney and his family. The town was named after General Gaffney, a Confederate general who fought in the American Revolution. In 1851, Gaffney became the county seat of Spartanburg County. The population of Gaffney totaled 4,835 in 1920. By 1960, the number of residents had dwindled to 2,451. Today, Gaffney is a small community located about 20 miles northeast of Spartanburg on Interstate 95. The history of Gaffney begins with John Gaffney and his family who settled here in 1792. They were farmers and later built a log cabin which served as their home until 1827 when they moved to a more permanent location and built a gristmill and sawmill. They also operated an academy for boys from childhood through high school until it closed its doors in 1907. The mill produced lumber which was used to build many homes throughout the county including those at present day Gafney Village where there are several churches still standing from that time period as well! In 1860, the population of Spartanburg County was 3,613; however by 1970 it had decreased to 2,451 with just 191 residents living within 5 miles of downtown! In 1920, Spartanburg County voters chose Driscoll as their new county seat following the resignation of previous incumbent Prentiss (now Richland). At that time there were only three other towns within Spartanburg County: Aiken (councilors only), Rock Hill (4 whites) and Greenville (5 white men). From 1920-1930 census data shows that there was no growth or change occurinSPartanburg Countysize or populations; however during World War II status changed considerably as over 60% of all male citizens served in uniform either our country or overseas! The final demise of both Aiken Municipal Corporation effective November 1st 1945 has left little evidence remaining save for one building now occupied by Lumberton Industrial Supply Company & Trucking since 1935 although this building is not actually part othe original structure erected around 1800! It should be noted though that apart from some alterations made post WW2 these buildings have continued unchanged thruout most recent incarnations – thus providing an excellent example demonstrating how even large municipalities can undergo drastic changes without affecting most exterior appearance ! Since Prentiss’s resignation on October 15th 1960 any attempts to increase city services within town limits were met with vehement opposition spearheaded by Driscolls Mayor “Jock” Hodge who stated quite simply what everyone knew but would rather keep quiet because it would upset their constituents – money talks !! Unfortunately this type oof resistance continues today Though less overtly expressed

The town was first inhabited by white settlers and then by slaves. The slave trade ended in 1807, but the town continued to be populated by African Americans until it became a white city in 1903.
