In 1820, General John Brown moved his family to Gaffney from their home in Waxhaw County, North Carolina after purchasing land there. The Motte-and-bailey mansion that General Brown built here still stands today as one of Gaffney's most famous landmarks. These businesses allowed Forrester & Company (later known as Peebles Woolen Mills) to become one of the leading textile companies in South Carolina at this time. Forrester also developed a large manufacturing plant here in what is now downtown Gaffney which produced everything from clothing to ammunition during World War II.
