Gaffney is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Gaffney is the oldest continually inhabited community in York County and has been continuously inhabited since 1792. The first permanent settler in Gaffney was John Pate who moved from North Carolina in 1792. George Witherspoon also made his home here around 1800. The town began to grow quickly after that and by 1830 it had a population of 1,600 people. However, growth stopped once the American Civil War started and Gaffney stayed largely rural until the late 19th century when mills became dominant industry in the area. In 1876 Gaffney became part of Wilson County when it was formed from parts of York and Spartanburg counties. The following year saw an influx of African Americans when US troops arrived to help suppress Reconstruction efforts across the South. By 1887 Gaffney had reached its current size with 2,000 residents. After World War I there were several expansions as more businesses came online and new construction began such as a movie theater and hospital which still operates today (the University Hospital). During the 1930s many small businesses closed down due to economic hard times but later on some large ones like Sears Roebuck came to town along with other success stories during this time period such as IBM which built their first plant here in 1938-39 (the original IBM campus remains extant today). In recent years there have been several attempts to revive downtown business including a mixed use project completed in 2009-10 but these have not gained much traction over the past few years; however there are plans for another major renovation/ redevelopment project set for completion early next decade which could bring significant changesto Gaffney's skyline
Gaffney was founded in 1770 by Captain John Gaffney and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named for General James Gaffney, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1854, Gaffney became a county seat of Davidson County.
