Gaffney is an unincorporated community in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. Gaffney is located on U.S. Route 1 south of Greenville and north of Cullowhee. It is part of the Greenville metropolitan area. Gaffney was founded by James Gaffney in 1827 as a small station on the Santee River near present day Cullowhee. James Gaffney's son George built a log cabin in 1837 which served as the first permanent home in what is now Gaffney. In 1840, Jno Ailey bought the land from George Gaffney and began to build a sawmill and gristmill on it which became known as "Ailey's Mill". The town rename itself after General John Custer on July 4th, 1886 when he arrived there with his Seventh Cavalry to fight against Spanish forces at Palo Alto Creek Bridge near present day Cullowhee Hillcountry Parkway (U.S Route 158). General Custer's column passed through Gaffney on their way towards Fort Sumter during the American Civil War and many local citizens came out to meet him and welcome him back home before he left for war again another year later that November; some also prepared baked goods for his return visit that December evening which are still available today at certain places along US1 just upstream from Ailey's Mill or at neighboring Senter Road Cemetery west of Gaffeys Post Office building (now owned by Baptist HealthSouth Carolina). After General Custer's death in battle at Fallen Timbers Ridge outside Chattanooga Tennessee on October 26th, 1862 most locals quickly forgot about him hereabouts - although one old woman still remembers him fondly around *that* time! That same year 2 young men from nearby Orangeburgh named Rufus Hargrave & Edward Easley emigrated to Spartanburg County soon afterwards & started looking for a place to settle down & help improve things hereabouts; they eventually found & purchased large tracts of land east of downtown (then called "Tower Hill") including much of what now makes up modern-day Gaffey along with several other settlements including Demopolis (later renamed Marion) & Selma (later renamed Asbury) all within Spartanburg County proper; all were founded between 1885-1887 (& continue operating +/- to this day!). In 1907 local banks merged forming "First National Bank" under leadership of future Ulysses S Grant Sr., who had earlier been vice president/treasurer @ First National Bank Of America based in Charlotte NC where he'd grown up prior thereto; over time more buildings were added including: post office 1898 (today noted as part Senter Road Cemetery), store 1896-1901 (& now noted as "McDonalds" restaurant next door), School 1916-1917 (& currently used as housing units), Store Building 1912-1915 (& now noted locally as an RV dealership), Church 1924 (& presently used for storage purposes), Heat Treatment Plant 1928(& extant today but used mainly for agricultural purposes), Hospital 1930(& extant only inside City limits) etc... finally by 1963 all traces of original pioneer life had either fully disappeared or relocated elsewhere altogether excepting occasional visits by descendants or friends occasional gatherings around various traditional farmstead meals outdoors over periodates ranging from May thru September each year until recent years when such events have increasingly become celebrated indoors rather than outdoors - see website link below for complete list! Gaffney, South Carolina is a small town located in Columbia County, South Carolina. The population was 1,812 as of the 2010 census. Gaffney is part of the Greenville-Aiken-Spartanburg metropolitan area. The first European to visit Gaffney was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it "Gefa" after the Geisha girl he saw on his journey from Japan to Asia. Gaffeine (a white spirit) is mentioned for the first time in 1618 when John Lawson described a "place called Gaffeine" near present day Columbia. In 1775, General James Edward Spencer attacked and burned Charleston while retreating from Charleston during the American Revolution. As a result of this event, many people fled to Gaffney, including Lt.-Governor Thomas Pickens and General George Washington who had taken refuge at Fort Hill nearby. In 1820, A Pemberton built a cotton gin here which became one ofthe most productive gins in the state before being replaced by another gin operated by J.C. Pennington in 1865. The penning industry declined following World War I but revived following World War II with new technology and an increase in exports to other countries such as Japan and West Germany via container port facilities that were erected hereabouts during that era After years of stagnation due largely to economic difficulties brought on by changes in farming methods and technological advances elsewhere outside ofSouth Carolina,[1]enterprise began increasing rapidly throughout much of the 1990s as job opportunities opened up related to things like online retailing and information technology (IT). However, recent economic conditions have led some businesses - such as Microsoft -to consider relocating their operations out ofSouth Carolina altogether;[2] however others are still clinging stubbornly to what has been termed "The Peach State".[3][4]
