Gaffney, South Carolina is a small town on the Savannah River in central South Carolina. The population was 3,543 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. The first inhabitants of Gaffney were Creek Indians who named it "Ki-gah-nuh" (Creek for "a place where there are many trees"). A post office called Gaffney was established in 1892, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1923, the town was renamed after General John J. Pershing, Commander of American Expeditionary Force during World War I and later U.S. Ambassador to France. The townsite that now makes up Gaffney was laid out by Colonel James Hance on May 10, 1811 as part of a land grant to Nathaniel Pearson from King George III of England. When Charleston got its own government in 1785, Hance's grant became part of Charleston County and continued to be used by both towns until it was taken away from Gaffney in 1823 when Spartanburg County got its own government. The first post office in Gaffney opened on October 12, 1892 under the name of Williston Post Office; it closed on December 14, 1906 due to high postal rates then being charged for mail delivery through rural areas at that time. In 1924, with America reaching its peak as a superpower following World War I and newly obtained independence from Great Britain, General John J. Pershing made an appearance in Gaffney as one of America's Generals Recognized at an event hosted by Mayor Cephus Hammett which also included Ulysses S Grant and Franklin D Roosevelt among others important personalities then living or soon living in America outside New York City or Washington D.C.. This event helped promote tourism within the area and also brought people together from all over eastern South Carolina to celebrate this patriotic momentous occasion which led to further development within the community over time including construction of local businesses such as Walmart Supercenter located just off US Highway 78 close to Interstate 85 which has since become one of Spartanburg’s most prominent commercial attractions
