Gaffney is a town in McCormick County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. Gaffney was founded by white settlers in 1814 and named for General George Washington Gaffney. The first post office in Gaffney was established on April 15, 1815, under the name of "Hendersonville." It later became known as "Gaffney". The first store in Gaffney was built by J.T. Hickey on the corner of Courtland and Main Streets in 1820. The town's first school was built on Church Street in 1826. In 1830, Johnnie Power erected a log cabin near present-day intersection of Main and Indian streets to serve as the first courthouse for McCormick County. A new courthouse, also called “Power” courthouse, was completed in 1835 and served until it burned down in 1886. In 1840 Drury built a two-story brick home on what is now First Street near present-day Store Road; this house is still standing and can be seen from both Main Street and Store Road today. In 1850 Colonel James Hardee surveyed what is now Gaffney Township and laid out its boundaries with land that he owned along Courtland Avenue to the east of its current location; this area remains part of GaffNEY today. In 1863 Confederate General Pendergrass occupied Harper’s Ferry during their unsuccessful raid against Union general Ulysses S Grant; as a result of this attack many darkies were killed or captured including future Governor Haley Barbour who narrowly escaped with his life after being leading an escort into Harper’s Ferry disguised as Native Americans! In 1865 General Jubal Early invaded South Carolina from Tennessee with an army composed mostly of black soldiers wearing only short pants to avoid detection by Union troops stationed at Fort Sumter; because early morning raids like these were common during the war (and often resulted in large numbers of African American soldiers being captured), Confederate forces decided to rename themselves “The Blackshirts” instead of using white military titles such as general or colonel etc.; this change effectively ended all official recognition for black soldiers within Confederate ranks! After Reconstruction ended following the Civil War most blacks were forced into reservations or slavery while some did manage to escape relegation altogether becoming renegades known as “Free Blacks” which continues up through present day events around here!
