In 1907, Gaffney became an incorporated city and its mayor was elected through popular vote rather than appointment by the state legislature which then controlled municipal affairs. The city annexed neighboring towns of Laurens and Uniontown effective January 1, 2009; these annexation changes increased Gaffney's population to over 3,000 residents with about two-thirds of that number living within its borders. It was founded in 1824 by Colonel George H. Gaffney and his brother-in-law Major John Ladd as a plantation called "Albany" after Albany, New York. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its easy access to boats and horses for transportation. In 1849, Gaffney became an official town of Columbia County and remained so until 1959 when it merged into the city of Columbia. The history of Gaffney goes back to 1824 when Colonel George H. Gaffney and his brother-in-law Major John Ladd founded the plantation "Albany" in present day Gaffney on the Savannah River near Hilton Head Island as part of their efforts to improve land around Charleston, SC for slaveowners. Albany quickly grew due to its location on the river and easy access to boats and horses for transportation; by 1830 it had a population of 1,500 people. By 1840 the population had increased to 2,000 people thanks in part to new plantations having been developed around Charleston by white businessmen motivated by profits from trade with British North America through the Atlantic Slave Trade). In 1849 Greenville County was created out of parts of South Carolina and Georgia along with Albemarle County which included present day Alabamian counties: Chatham (now Hampton), Camden (now Mount Pleasant), Georgetown (now Rock Hill), Kershaw (now Lancaster)and Jasper (now Sumter). These new counties were intended primarily as slaveholders’ areas but also served as buffers against Indian attacks from southward during this period known as “the war for independence” or “the American Revolution”; thus their boundaries reflected those that would be established shortly thereafter for Charleston proper including Albemarle County which lay just east of Greenville County withinits limits while present day Spartanburg lies entirely within Greenville County itself–an arrangement that continued until 1889 when Georgetown formally detached from Greenville County under pressure from African Americans seeking greater autonomy within their own community As early as 1781 whites had begun purchasing slaves upriver at Stono Ferryboat Landing where they were unloaded onto flatboats destined for coastal properties along Beaufort Harbor – most notably Albermarle Plantation run by Sir James Moore whose family owned some 870 slaves by 1800 Boat travel became increasingly dangerous given rapids upstream making navigation difficult especially during times of high flood water levels; this led many planters to build more permanent settlements along riverside estuaries rather than rely solely upon sailboats transportations Thus beginning what would become known as “the Colonial period” local primary production lasted until about 1800s before imports began becoming increasingly important due both To developments ashore such as rapid technological advances leading directly thereto [i e., cotton ginning] & increasing demand inland [i e., growth in mean sea level], prices fell precipitously below costelage
