Gaffney is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Gaffney is the county seat of Spartanburg County. The first white person to settle in what is now Gaffney was Andrew Jackson on December 10, 1777. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the Cooper River. The first school in Gaffney was opened by Mrs. John Settle in 1803. The first post office in Gaffney was established in 1807 and named for General James Greenough who had just come from America with General Cornwallis's army and had been given command of all American forces stationed at Stono Ferry Road and Whitewater Plantation near Uniontown, North Carolina. In 1861, Confederate troops burned down the courthouse which housed court records for both Gaffney and Spartanburg counties as part of their campaign to destroy any evidence that they were part of the Confederacy. A new courthouse was built and dedicated on July 1, 1862 by Governor Robert Easley following orders from Confederate General Jubal Early. In 1865 Union soldiers burned down the courthouse again as part of their campaign to capture all Confederate materiel within reach across South Carolina including books, documents, uniforms, cannons etc.. A new courthouse was built and dedicated on November 1st 1865 by Ulysses S Grant after orders from Ulysses S Grant himself as a way to emphasize that war did not stop at Appomattox Court House! The present day Gaffney Chamber of Commerce building was completed in 1907 after plans were drawn up by local architect Jules Rouse based on sketches he made of an earlier structure which had fallen into disrepair over time. It is considered one of the most significant early examples of concrete construction in Spartanburg County when it opened! A major project initiated by Mayor Gerald Tillery during his administration which saw many jobs created throughout town included resurfacing streets including High Street & Grove Avenue; creating a new water main; adding sidewalks & streetlights; completing landscape work around city limits; painting roofs & window sills inside & outside; fending off termites with copper wire

The town has a rich history dating back to 1814 when it was founded as a small farming community by CaptainJohn Gaffney and his wife Anna. By 1860, the community had grown to include a school and saw its first wave of prosperity as cotton production increased in the area. However, during the 1930s and 1940s, Gaffney experienced significant economic decline due to several factors including World War II and then-president Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs which created government support for large industries in order to build jobs. Despite this adversity, Gaffney has seen recent growth in recent decades thanks to efforts by its mayor and city council members who have worked towards revitalization of the community through various initiatives such as new schools, an arts center, and an outdoor park.
