Gaffney is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded on December 1, 1814 by General James A. Gaffney and his troops as a post on the Weldon Railroad. The first settler in Gaffney was John Hogg who arrived in 1815. The community name derived from "gaffe" which means "a Government House." Gaffney became home to many distinguished citizens during its early years including General James A. Gaffney and Representative George Stephenson. In 1860 it was the scene of one of the most important political events in American history when Abraham Lincoln won the Ulysses S Grant election as President of the United States with support from local residents. In 1969, Gaffney voters approved passage of an ordinance creating a city government with a Mayor and City Councilhead as its primary governing body separate from that of Greenville County government. On November 3rd, 1970, Mayor Wm Fenton signed an ordinance establishing Gaffney as a city within Greenville County with full power to pass ordinances and make decisions without prior approval from county officials
