Gaffney, South Carolina is a small town located in Marion County, South Carolina. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Gaffney is home to the Gaffney-Branch Memorial Library and the Gaffney Volunteer Fire Department. The town also has two schools: Cherry Hill Elementary School and Pee Dee Middle School. The first settler in Gaffney was Nicholas McGraw who arrived in 1786. McGraw's wife, Susannah Greenough, helped to plant the first trees in Gaffney Township on February 18, 1789. In 1802, James White settled in Gaffney and established a sawmill which he operated for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1876. In that year also, John Brown erected a brick school house which served as both an education and meeting place for early settlers of this township. From those earliest days until 1865 when all public schools were discontinued by order of Governor Andrew Johnson due to financial reasons, Cherry Hill Elementary School operated as the only school in Gaffny Township. In that year too Pee Dee Middle School was built and served students through 6th grade until it burned down during Hurricane Floyd in 1999-2000; however, it was rebuilt and serves students through 8th grade today! In 1865 Avis Orr became the first white woman to purchase land within what is now Marion County when she purchased 3 acres from Stephen Foster at $10 per acre! She started building her home there on that property which she named "Gable" after her husband's family name (Galloway). Mrs Orr continued farming there until her death circa 1922 when her land passed into trust for use as a mental hospital! Over time several other families bought parcels of farms surrounding Mrs Orr's original farmstead including: Drinker & Holmes (1929), Park & Rhett (1934), Griggs (1945), Handy (& Hargrave) (1947), Rankin (& Smith) (1950), Kelly (& Finley) (1963). Mrs Orry's final resting place can be found on one of these tracts of land currently used as part of Post Oak Forest Zoo!
