The base also contains a library with more than 1 million books representing every genre under the sun as well as an amphitheater capable seating up to seventy-five thousand people which is used for concerts and other events annually.

Gaffney, South Carolina is a small town located in York County, South Carolina. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. Gaffney is part of the Myrtle Beach–Fort Mill Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has a post office and two churches: First Baptist Church and Christ United Methodist Church. The first settler in Gaffney was Thomas Prentiss who arrived in 1818. By 1830, there were ten families living in Gaffney. The first school was built in 1835 by Mr. John Ritchie and taught reading, writing, arithmetic and English to children from six to twelve years old. In 1840–41 three more schools were built: one for boys (grades K-2), one for girls (grades 3-8) and one for African Americans (grades 9-12). In 1845 an act of congress created the York County School District No 1 which included Gaffney; it continued until 1954 when it was absorbed into the Charleston County School District No 1. In that year, Gaffney's school board voted to merge with the larger district because of budget constraints within the county government. In 1865 Confederate General Robert E Lee came through town on his way to Morristown to lead his army against Ulysses S Grant’s Union army at Gettysburg; he stopped at Gaffney on his way eastward. A local store keeper named James Wofford provided him with food and water while he stayed overnight; after leaving Gaffney Lee ordered all stores closed throughout South Carolina due to shortages of goods caused by war efforts elsewhere in America Gaffeiy's citizens boycotted state services during Reconstruction because they felt they had been wronged by the new government
In 1847, Gaffney was founded by James Gaffney and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson and his family. In 1865, the town was consolidated with nearby Indianola to form a new municipality.
