The first post office was established in Gaffney on December 5, 1828. The present day elementary school building was built in 1903 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire. In 1908, a new high school (now Pee Dee) was built adjacent to the original Elementary School. The first principal of this school was Dr. James Henson who served from 1912 until his retirement in 1944 . Mrs. John Fenton Harrison served from 1945 until her death in 1976 then Mrs..Stuart Crouch took over for six years before leaving to become interim superintendent of schools due to lack of succession planning within district government at that time; she eventually succeeded Dr..Crouch as Superintendent in 1978 . The current high school building opened on October 1st, 1984 with classes starting up on September 30th following a renovation project which cost $2 million dollars . They named their new place "Gaffney." Gaffney was founded by Captain John Smith on December 15, 1775 when he and his party set out from Roanoke Island for Charleston Harbor. On May 12, 1776 General George Washington's army passed through Gaffney on its way to Augusta, Georgia. Captain John Smith returned to GaffNEY on July 4th with a group of Englishmen who had come overland from Providence Plantations and taken up land near what is now Greenville. These men called themselves the "British Settlers." Because they were not citizens of America they were not allowed to defend themselves against American forces as long as they remained within British territory
