Fort Mill is a small town in Carteret County, South Carolina. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Hiwassee River south of Fort Mill. A new sawmill started operations here in 1907 and continued operating until it burned down on July 2, 1914; again arson being suspected as the cause of fire.

The new fort served as an outpost for years and eventually fell into disuse because of its location out of reach for enemy troops. However, in 1814, during the War of 1812, some Union soldiers burned down the old fort while stationed nearby. This destroyed most of the original structure but not the cannons or walls which still stand today!
