In 1851, the United States Army set up a garrison at Fort Mill in South Carolina to support the Confederate army. The fort was home to a number of artillery pieces and hand cannons, as well as ammunition stores. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to move his headquarters from Richmond, Virginia to Fort Mill. The Confederates placed a battery at the fort’s entrance for protection against Union troops coming through town. On April 12, 1861, Lieutenant Colonel John Cropsey of Company A1 (better known as "The Black Devils") of the 2nd Regiment South Carolina Volunteers discovered an arsenal and stockade belonging to the Union army at Fort Mill. He notified Captain Samuel Capps of Company I (the “Cavalry”) of the discovery, who immediately started forward with his men to attack the Union forces while they were unloading their equipment. Aftermath showed that this action was successful; however, there were no casualties on either side and only minor damage done to property. When Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved his headquarters from Richmond, Virginia to Fort Mill on April 12th he also ordered all artillery pieces within easy reach be moved into position around town so that they could be used against any Federals coming through town or trying to enter by way of Castle Park Road in front of the fortification. Fort Mill is a small town in Pickens County, South Carolina. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area.
