Fort Mill was established in 1865 as a fort on the Pickens River. It became an arsenal in 1875 and later a military post. The Post Office closed in 1945 but the fort continued to be used as a base of operations for the Fort Mill Army Ammunition Plant until its closure in 1978. After that, it served as an open-air museum until it was renovated and reopened in 2002. The post office at Fort Mill was opened on May 6, 1865 by General James Hance. At that time, South Carolina had not yet become a state and there were no postal facilities within the area. The first mail Routes from Charleston arrived at Fort Mill on horseback because there were no cars or wagons available to convey mail then. In 1875, the army built a new armory adjacent to the old fort which functioned asFort Mill's garrison Ammo Plant until its closure in 1978. In 1902, when Fort Mill's arsenal became an open-air museum, it retained its guns and artillery pieces from its days as an armory while also displaying many historic artifacts from throughout South Carolina history including cannons dating back to 1795 and rifles dating back to before Reconstruction (1866). Today, Fort Mill is home to several shops and restaurants along with dozens of historical exhibits including original firearms displayed case by case along with ammunition displays illustrating how both European muzzleloaders and American breechloading pistols have been used over time. To prevent any widespread panic, Howe ordered all communities east of Charleston not to send men or munitions westward until further notice. This order caused some fear among local inhabitants that they would be next on Howe's list if war broke out between England and America proper (the colonies). It was not long before people realized that this order was simply a way for Howe to control communication between his army and Boston because he knew that any munitions sent west would fall into enemy hands - something which he wanted desperately prevented! In response to this situation, local leaders decided that Fort McLeod would become one of the primary defended positions within colonial South Carolina should war break out between Great Britain and America proper (the colonies). Named after General Robert Thomson's victory over Native Americans at Mount Hood two years earlier, Fort McLeod had been previously unoccupied by British troops; its capture would provide valuable intelligence about Australian intentions on the southeastern seaboard! When word arrived back home about how well Mount Hood had performed, General Howe ordered his troops back upriver instead of attacking New Bern because he believed that larger numbers could not succeed against Native Americans who had fought with distinction under Major-General George Washington! As it turned out, both actions led directly into Patriot effectiveness against British forces during King George III's War - another example4of how small towns like Fort Mill played an important role in American history! Fort Mill became an important military post during both World Wars due its location close together with other strategic locations such as Goose Creek Ferry Bridge across Horry River

The first white settlers in Fort Mill came from Massachusetts and Rhode Island in the early 1760s. They were looking for a place to build a trading post and store because they could not find any suitable land in South Carolina. The fort was built in 1772, by the British military, to protect the town against Indian attacks. The first commander of the fort was Captain John Chalmers. In 1815, Fort Mill was captured by General Andrew Jackson during his Battle of Moblin Field. Aftermath, most of the buildings were burned down but some remain standing today including the jail and government building.
