Scope mounts are a type of mounting system for firearms that allow the use of a bipod or other accessory to stabilize the firearm while in battery. The first scope mounts were designed and built by Colt Firearms Company in 1879. They were used on rifles such as the Model 1881 and 1892, which had either one or two sling swivels at the front of the rifle stock. These mounts allowed shooters to mount optics directly on top of their rifles, making them easier and more accurate to use. In 1916, Winchester Repeating Arms Company introduced its own scope mount design called the "Winchester" mount. Fort Mill, South Carolina was founded in 1777 by the British and Americans. The first European to arrive in the area was Captain John Smith who established a post on the mainland of what is now Fort Mill. The town grew around this site until it was moved to its current location in 1836 when the fort was sold to Colonel James Moultrie. In 1842, Moultrie donated land for a new courthouse and jail, which became known as "Moultrie Square." In 1860, Fort Mill became part of Confederate States of America and during World War II, it served as an Army base. It closed in 1945 and today it is a museum.
