Fort Mill is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,524 at the 2010 census. Fort Mill is located on the border of Greenville and Anderson counties. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The fortifications in Fort Mill were built by General Andrew Johnson during the American Civil War to protect against Confederate forces movements into neighboring Anderson County. The fortifications are still in use today and are known for their cannons which can be heard from miles away. In 1865, Fort Mill was burned by Confederate troops in order to prevent it from being used as a Union supply depot during the Battle of Gettysburg; this event is commemorated by a large 4-foot (1 m) tall Confederate flagpole near downtown Fort Mill. Fort Mill was founded in 1821 as a trading post onethy called "Ft." Smithsborough". In 1834, it became known as "Fort Mills" after Governor John C Williamson granted its land to local farmers for development into what would become Fort Mill. Johnston's Headquarters were established here in 1863 and later moved to Raleigh after his campaign against Northern forces ended there on July 9th that year with victory at Chancellorsville; he then returned southward through Spartanburg County until reaching Fort Sumter on April 12th, 1865 before returning home via Virginia Beach two days later aboard USS Hatteras under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter when that ship arrived off North Carolina coast on April 14th just prior to Abraham Lincoln's first inauguration as President that day: Ft. Mills served as Homeport for River Squadron 2nd Fleet during that tour of duty while also providing interim garrison for Wilmington Naval Base ashore until decommissioned June 15th 1865; Today, nearby Greenville has taken up most of the old fortifications' acreage while new neighborhoods have been built adjacent to them including an amphitheater which serves both Greenville College and the popular tourist destination SCUBA diving; various businesses have sprung up around town such as JB Hi-Fi Radio & TV store (now closed), BP gas station (& now Home Depot), antique store/gallery etc., along with several Driving Schools which offer lessons on how to operate AAA vehicles etc... As one of only two communities within 25 miles (40 km) of Charleston metropolitan area - one being Hilton Head Island - Fort Mill enjoyed high levels of commercial activity throughout much of its history due largely to its location midway between both cities centerpieces - Charleston and Edgefield; this helped keep prices low enough so residents could stay affordable even when production outside their community dropped off starting about 1960 or so following World War II....Healey's Department Store had operated continuously since 1883 opposite current day Bank Of America building until late 1990s when bank pulled out all significant investments leaving Healey open only seasonally.....During prohibition years all available liquor was purchased outright from brewer/distributor licensed by law enforcement agencies who managed distribution based upon needs rather than selling directly... Although Sunday closing laws applied generally throughout much if not all towns within radius including Ft MILL prohibiting liquor sales outdoors except inside churches or public buildings - some stores continued operations such as Gandy Emporium across river next door which did not close despite prohibition prohibitions...... Most important economic impact however may have been created due primarily to numerous agricultural products grown here such as cotton ginners making income exporting crop produce back home vs buying items locally......... After repealment many farms went bankruptcies due lack of customers needing goods produced there,... Today few longitudinally irrigated fields remain but some light industrial ventures taking place like manufacturing services for electronic equipment company etc.. although local purchasing power continues slowly ebbing away............... Fort Mill was founded in 1795 by Major James Wilkinson, who named it for his birthplace, Fort William Henry on the Cherokee River. The site of the present-day town had been occupied by a Native American village since before European contact. Wilkinson and his men built a small fort here in 1795 to protect their settlement from attack by the Cherokees. The walled fort served as a military installation until 1814, when it was abandoned due to lack of resources and construction projects elsewhere in the colony. In 1837, Fort Mill became the capital of South Carolina after its founding as the state's second city. It remained an important center of government until 1861, when Charleston took control of all southcentral United States territory following Confederate victory at Culloden Field. In 1865,after Charleston's fall to Union forces, Fort Mill continued to serve as a military garrison until its closure in 1868. The fort is now preserved as part of Fort Mill State Historic Site. The fort is significant both for its history and for being one of only two Ulysses S. Grant–era buildings still standing in South Carolina (the other being Candler Hall). It has also been used as a tourist attraction, most notably during African American History Month celebrations in May and November each year.
